Angry! TICKED OFF! REALLY PISSED!
That's how I felt when I heard the Tony Award Nominations. Jim Parsons is one of my FAVORITE actors. I love him as Sheldon on The Big Bang Theory. but yesterday, I wanted to deck the guy.
In March, my son took our family to New York. We had a wonderful week of Broadway theater. Jesus Christ! Superstar!, Evita, Wit, Death of a Salesman, Book of Mormon (which was awesome except for those SMALL orchestra seats-we saw Spring Awakening in the mezz and those seats were so much more comfortable), How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (I REALLY wanted to see Daniel, but had to settle for a JO-BRO-MEH!), GHOST (in its VERY FIRST North American preview), and Rent (the off Broadway production is really good, I believe Mr. Larson~RIP~would approve AND NEW WORLD STAGES IS AMAZING!) AND Godspell...
I have to say, that as a kid, my older brother had the concept album of Jesus Christ, Superstar! and at 11, I knew EVERY word to that show. I finally saw it as an adult and mother, and introduced my sons to Musical Theatre with this show when they were younger than 12...but, even though I have a deep love for JCS, I shake my head at it being nominated INSTEAD of Godspell!!
I'm in complete and total SHOCK that the "Broadway Establishment" (which I compare to the "establishment" of old fogies who hated Princess Diana) COMPLETELY SNUBBED GODSPELL!!! Hunter Parrish KILLED IT in that show, Telly Leung (who I loved in Rent-"honest living man!"), and Uzo Adube were AMAZING!! And the show WAS SNUBBED TOTALLY!! The staging at Circle in the Square was wonderful and this show DIDN'T GET EVEN ONE TONY NOMINATION!!
JCS was "good" but adding a few hip hop moves and copying the Jersey Boys staging made me regret bugging my son about seeing it. I've seen two very good tour productions, that were COMPLETELY different, and this new production had so many pointless moves, that seemed to be just thrown in there to catch attention, they caught THE WRONG kind of attention...that platform extension that Jesus walked out on over the audience was one of those, "WHY WAS THAT NECESSARY??" moments for me.
And EVITA?? The only thing that made me smile about the whole 2012 Tony Nomination Ceremony was that Ricky Martin and Elena Roger WERE NOT nominated.
I'm nauseated again just thinking about the Tony Noms yesterday, so I'm going to stop here. I will end by saying,
GODSPELL WAS ROBBED!!!

Oh, come on, tell us what you really think! hahahahaha I can read that you are really passionate about this and that you are really a HUGE fan of Broadway theater! That is so cool. Now you MUST, MUST, MUST find a way to channel that into a craft project!!! Seriously, it would be fabulous!
ReplyDeleteHa! Nadia! Being from NY I love this too, but I think once i started crafting I kinda fell off from it. but I can totally sympathize with you my dear!

I totally agree with you about Godspell, it was an amazing production and well worthy of a nomination in at least 1 category!

Colleen. Wasn't it great. I really thought it was a bad joke that Godspell didn't get even one nomination.
DeleteYou guys are just lucky to actually see all those productions, we get one up here every now and then and it's hit and miss if you can get tickets!
ReplyDeleteNow I gotta watch for Godspell....

I haven't been lucky to see any Broadway productions but I absolutely loved JCS when it was a film. I, too, knew every single word to those songs. I thought the actors did a phenomenal job. I never saw Godspell, so can't compare. :-)
ReplyDeleteBut, like Nadia said, you really shouldn't hold back in what you're saying. LOL :-)
Lol. I'm passionate about Broadway.
